India’s GDP ranking is at 6th position globally in 2025 despite strong nominal growth in rupee terms at roughly
9 per cent during the year. This could be largely due to the depreciation of the rupee due to the West Asia crisis
(and a stronger dollar) and downward revisions to GDP under the new series, which together moderated the
expansion of India’s GDP in dollar terms. However, the Indian economy is expected to improve its rankings
2027 onwards as India catapults to the 4th position and maintains it through 2030, further climbing to the 3rd
position by 2031.
